The Mediterranean
island of Capri, for decades a popular
tourist site, is known for its liberated sexuality and for its celebrated
residents and visitors, from V.I. Lenin
to Brigitte Bardot. Jean-Luc
Godard's film "Contempt", starring Bardot,
Jack Palance and Michel
Picoli, was filmed there in the mid-1960's. Not as well known
is the fact that many people have jumped or fallen to their deaths from
its high cliffs. Much of the island is so vertical and difficult to tame
for human use that only two major roads allow cars and buses, and one must
go on foot to all the other parts of the island. My small but feisty crew
was obliged to carry the film equipment for long distances by wheelbarrow.
